The hermitages are some buildings, shrines, churches, chapels, situated far from the stocks and used for Christian
worship, represent a valuable heritage resource in the Sierra, which adds to its location and environmental, and attractions landscape. Its origin is directly linked to the colonization of the area in the late Middle Ages and is justified by the tradition of apparitions of virgins and miracles. The construction of chapels spread from then until the nineteenth century, slowing the process of the confiscation and recovery after the Civil War. In the recovery and conservation of rural chapels powerfully influenced the reactivation of the pilgrimage, when the brotherhoods have taken charge of the constructions and reconstructions, sometimes unfortunate from an artistic standpoint.
Many chapels in the Sierra de Huelva have lost their use as such (The Aliseda in Cumbres de St. Bartolome, The Virtudes in La Nava, St. Sebastian or St. Salvador Aracena Puerto Moral) and others only remnants (The Magdalena Cumbres Mayores, St. Brigida in Cortegana, St. Ginés in Aracena or St. Sebastian Almonaster).
